Context

The manuscript was written in 1468, thirteen years after the French Victory in the Hundred Years War.  It was written in the middle of the War of the Roses in England.  The Treaty of Peronne was signed by Charles the Bold and Louis XI.  This was a time of war and strife.  Even though the major war with England was over, there were still territorial wars throughout France and Burgundy.
Europe was still recovering from the Black Death, which revived itself periodically, including from 1464-1466.  The Black death killed off a significant portion of the population of Europe, the Middle East, Western Asia and Northern Africa, somewhere between 30 and 60 percent.
This was also during the beginning stages of the Age of Exploration.  Which was an offshoot of the desire to learn more. People were wanting to discover new things in their physical environment and go back in history to discover things that were lost.  It is these thoughts that led to the Renaissance.
